Yes, you can have a sauna in an HDB flat or a condo in Singapore. The practical choice is a compact indoor infrared cabin that plugs into a standard socket and is assembled in the room. This guide covers what fits, the power it needs, the HDB and condo rules to check, ventilation, floor load and delivery through the lift, using the TUNDRA Equinox as the worked example.
The short answer
- What fits: a one person cabin of 95 x 95 cm or a two person cabin of 120 x 100 cm, 1.95 m high, in a bedroom, study or living room.
- Power: a standard 13 A socket. The Equinox draws 1,625 W (about 7.0 A) for one person or 1,760 W (about 7.7 A) for two.
- Approvals: HDB's renovation guidelines do not mention saunas. A plug-in cabin needs no hacking, tiling, plumbing or new wiring. Check with your HDB branch or your MCST before you order, and use a Licensed Electrical Worker for any electrical work.
- Price: the Equinox costs S$5,590 for one person and S$6,590 for two, delivered and installed by our team in Singapore.

Space: what fits in a bedroom or study
The Equinox comes in two sizes:
| 1 person | 2 persons | |
|---|---|---|
| Outside (W x D x H) | 95 x 95 x 195 cm | 120 x 100 x 195 cm |
| Inside (W x D x H) | 86 x 86 x 185 cm | 110 x 91 x 185 cm |
| Net weight | 138 kg | 170 kg |
| Power | 1,625 W, about 7.0 A | 1,760 W, about 7.7 A |
| Temperature | Adjustable to 65 °C | Adjustable to 65 °C |
| Price | S$5,590 | S$6,590 |
To plan the space, add about 60 cm in front of the glass for the door to open. A one person cabin then needs a floor area of about 95 x 155 cm, and a two person cabin about 120 x 160 cm. Allow a ceiling height of about 2.1 m: during assembly the roof panel is lifted over the walls and lowered on. If your ceiling is lower, tell us before you order.
The cabin can stand against a wall or in a corner. Leave room to reach the joints and the top of the walls during assembly, and keep the socket within reach of the power cord, which leaves the cabin at the roof and runs down the back.

Power: 13 A socket or dedicated circuit
A standard 13 A socket at 230 V can supply up to about 3 kW (13 A x 230 V). The Equinox needs about 1.6 to 1.8 kW, so it runs from an ordinary socket with no special wiring. Three points:
- Plug the cord directly into a grounded socket. Do not use an extension lead or a multi-plug.
- Use a socket that does not also feed another large load such as an air conditioner, a water heater or a kettle.
- The circuit should have residual-current protection (RCD).
Larger saunas are hard-wired. The Valo needs one dedicated 20 A circuit, the Ounas one 16 A or 20 A circuit, the Ignis one 25 A circuit, and the Haven a dedicated circuit for its 6 kW heater. In HDB flats this matters. HDB's electrical guidelines state that appliances rated above 15 A are not allowed and that a 20 A isolator is only allowed for air-conditioner installation. Flats in blocks completed on or after 1 January 1994, or upgraded under the Main Upgrading Programme or the Home Improvement Programme, have a 40 A main switch; other flats need an HDB permit to add new 15 A power points. A plug-in cabin avoids all of this. For any hard-wired sauna in an HDB flat, check with HDB first and use a Licensed Electrical Worker.
Approvals
HDB flats
HDB's renovation guidelines list which works need a permit. They do not mention saunas. Relevant points:
- The Equinox is free-standing. It is assembled in the room from prefabricated panels and plugs into an existing socket. No hacking, tiling, plumbing or new wiring is involved.
- HDB's building works guidelines list "installation of equipment not exceeding 150 kg" as work that needs no permit. The term equipment is not defined further. The one person Equinox weighs 138 kg net, the two person 170 kg.
- All electrical work in an HDB flat must be carried out by a licensed electrical worker.
- Place the cabin inside your flat, never in the common corridor.
Because the rules do not name saunas, check with your HDB branch before you order. We send you the drawings, weights and power figures for the enquiry.
Condos
- Under the strata rules, improvements to your unit that affect the appearance of the building need approval from the management corporation (MCST). An indoor cabin does not change the facade. A cabin on a balcony or roof terrace can, so ask your MCST first.
- Most condos have a procedure for renovation and bulky deliveries: a form, a deposit, permitted hours and lift booking. Ask your managing agent for the current form and book the service lift for delivery day.
- A hard-wired cabin needs a dedicated circuit installed by a Licensed Electrical Worker. Ask the managing agent whether the condo needs notice of the electrical work.
Ventilation and humidity
An infrared cabin uses no water, so it adds no humidity to the room. Its heaters warm the body directly, and the cabin air stays cooler than in a Finnish sauna. It needs an ordinarily ventilated, dry room. Do not box the cabin in, and do not put it in a bathroom or anywhere it can be splashed. The Equinox is for indoor use only: its hemlock exterior is not treated for rain or sun.
Steam saunas such as the Caldera and Vapora work differently. They add moisture to the room, so air the room after each session.

Floor load
The base frame carries the whole cabin, so the floor must be level, flat and firm across the full footprint. The figures, worked out from the net weight plus 100 kg per person spread over the footprint:
- Equinox, 1 person: 138 kg net on 95 x 95 cm, about 264 kg per square metre with one person inside.
- Equinox, 2 persons: 170 kg net on 120 x 100 cm, about 308 kg per square metre with two people inside.
On a raised floor, a timber deck, a mezzanine, a balcony or a roof terrace, have the floor checked by a qualified engineer. Protect a delicate floor finish with a thin rigid mat that covers the full footprint.
Delivery through the lift and corridor
The Equinox travels as flat, prefabricated panels. The largest single parts are the walls and the front frame, each a little under the 1.95 m cabin height; the front frame carries the glass. Before delivery day:
- Measure the lift car (height, width and depth), the corridor turns and your front door, and send us the figures.
- In a condo, book the service lift with the management office.
- Clear the room where the cabin will stand. The cabin is built in place and should not be moved once assembled.
Our team carries the panels in, assembles the cabin, connects the heaters, tests it and removes the packaging. Assembly takes about 30 to 45 minutes with two people.

Frequently asked questions
Is a sauna allowed in an HDB flat?
HDB's renovation guidelines do not mention saunas. A free-standing infrared cabin that plugs into an existing socket involves no renovation works, and HDB lists equipment up to 150 kg as needing no permit. Check with your HDB branch before you order. Hard-wired saunas are limited by HDB's electrical rules, which do not allow appliances rated above 15 A.
Can I put a sauna on my condo balcony?
Only with MCST approval, as a cabin on a balcony can affect the appearance of the building. The Equinox is for indoor use only. The Valo is built for indoor and outdoor use; on a balcony it puts about 330 kg per square metre on the floor with one person inside, so have the structure checked by a qualified engineer first.
How much electricity does it use?
The one person Equinox is rated at 1,625 W. A 30-minute session at full power uses up to about 0.8 kWh, plus the warm-up time. Actual use depends on the warm-up and the set temperature.
Does it need plumbing or a drain?
No. An infrared cabin uses no water. It needs a level floor, a grounded socket and an ordinarily ventilated room. You can preheat it from the control panel or from the app.
TUNDRA products are wellness equipment, not medical devices. If you are pregnant or have a heart, circulatory or other medical condition, speak to your doctor first.
