TUNDRA × Palooza: Cold Is Social at METT Singapore

Two guests laughing together in a TUNDRA communal ice bath at RESET by Palooza, METT Singapore

Palooza took over METT Singapore on Sunday the sixth of September and called it RESET. Padel in the afternoon, yoga at five, a DJ long after that. TUNDRA was asked to run the part in the middle.

There is a particular kind of Singapore Sunday that begins with a racket in your hand and never quite ends. This was one of those.

It had a shape. The courts at two, with the light coming off the turf in the flat gold way it does in September. The deck after that, where the water was waiting. Mats at five. And then, for a long while, nobody went home.

The courts, at two

Everybody arrives at a thing like this a little too well dressed for it, and then commits anyway. Whites, visors, a great deal of laughing at unforced errors. An hour of padel in Singapore in September does what an hour of padel in Singapore in September does, which is to send a group of very composed people looking for somewhere cool to stand.

The deck

The tub sat between the courts and the rest of the afternoon. Two metres across, dark, perfectly still, minding its own business under the palms.

On the run sheet it was a gap. What it turned into was the room. People got in, got out, and then did not leave. They sat along the edge with their legs in the water, watching whoever was next talk themselves into it, and the conversation moved off the court and into the water and stayed there for three hours.

Nobody planned to stay at the tub. Everybody stayed at the tub.

Thirty seconds

Everyone hesitates at the edge. Then there is a sound that is not quite a word, and eight seconds later the face changes, and by thirty seconds the whole thing has gone quiet.

That is the entire event. Thirty seconds. It is a very long time on your own and it is nothing at all with somebody beside you, which is why a tub built for eight does something a tub built for one cannot. One of them is a discipline. The other is a table.

Robes, and long chairs

Not everybody wants to be cold, and the afternoon was generous about it. A row of loungers went along the edge of the deck, towels folded, boots laid open and waiting.

The boots are the most quietly luxurious thing we make, and for an entirely unglamorous reason: once they are on, you cannot get up. Twenty minutes, legs raised, everything else briefly somebody else's problem. More than one person said it was the first time they had properly sat down all week.

Boots on the legs, the gun on a shoulder, and not one conversation interrupted.

Six o'clock

There is a particular look people have twenty minutes after cold water. Robe, wet hair, a drink they are in no hurry to finish, sitting very still and talking more slowly than they were an hour before.

That look is the product. The tub is only how you get there.

And then it got dark

Mats came out at five, and the room that had met at the water lay down in it together. Later there were singing bowls, and later still a DJ, and the hotel did the thing good hotels do, which is get out of the way.

By the time the music started, most of the room had already met each other. That is not how a Sunday usually goes.

If you are planning one of these

The communal tub was an Oasis, 1,100 litres, five to eight people at a time, with a single Yukon plunge beside it for anyone who wanted the cold to themselves. Both went in on the Saturday with the chillers running overnight, and that is not a preference. Cold water in Singapore is a lead time. Fill on the morning and you hand your guests a tub of tepid water and an anticlimax.

The dry half was five sets of FLUX compression and five TUNDRAGUN LUX, plus one guide, because the first thirty seconds are a conversation and somebody has to have it with you.

The one thing worth stealing from Palooza: recovery belongs in the middle of an event, not at the end of it. At the end it is a queue on the way to the car park. In the middle it becomes the place everybody is.

More than the event kit

Most people meet us at an afternoon like this one, so it is worth saying what else we build. Solid cold plunges for homes, gyms and hotels, made to stay where they are put. Saunas in Finnish cedar, infrared and steam. And custom builds, drawn around your room, rooftop or wellness floor rather than around a catalogue page.

If you are choosing a unit rather than booking an event, start with the ice bath buyer's guide or the home sauna buyer's guide.

Thank you

To Palooza, for putting recovery in the middle of the day instead of tacking it on at the end. To METT Singapore, for the deck and for the access the day before. And to everyone who said absolutely not, and then got in anyway.

Bring TUNDRA to your event

Beach clubs, gym openings, race days, brand activations and afternoons exactly like this one. We build the recovery experience, cold, heat, compression and massage, and run it with our own team across Singapore, Bangkok, Hong Kong, Manila and Jakarta. Planning something? Get in touch or see the TUNDRA ice bath collection.

Return to yourself.
